It’s surprising to learn the rate of new business start-ups during the period of a recession. Whether it was during the 30’s, 80’s or today, more people are taking a chance to become their own boss and forgoing the nine to five. There are about 23 million small businesses registered in the U.S., of which women make up 11 million with Black women representing 5.2 million. Women account for 43% of business owners v. men at 32% . Obviously, the fairer sex are doing it and doing it well! However, like any other endeavor it is about strategy, execution and determination. So how do you start your own business? What do you need to become an entrepreneur?
Ten Tips to Entrepreneurial Success
1. Utilize the resources available such as the Small Business Association (SBA), Chambers of Commerce and research, research, research.
2. Google the type of business you want to start. Find out about professional organizations in the field. Read blogs, bulletin boards, industry articles and buy the magazines or books that can provide you with more info.
3. Find a niche and stick to it. No one can be all things for all people. Figure out what you do well, and enjoy, and build your company on that. You must commit to one business. The biggest roadblock to being an entrepreneur is fear of choosing one business and going for it.
Should we thank man for Facebook (FB)? Yes, it is a wonderful tool that rekindles past friendships, connects family members regardless of time zones and helps promote your business/brand but can FB do more than just reconnect old friends? I recently read an article in the New York Times, which stated that the #1 social networking site is accountable for 12% of breakups last year. If that’s not bad enough, almost one in five of online divorce petitions filed by angry spouses blamed FB for the dissolution of their marriage. WTF! Are there that many people getting laid on facebook? Obviously, members that utilize the website for friendships and networking are missing out on this hot dating scene.
Old man winter is sparing no expense, with the recent snow (up to 24 inches), ghastly winds and 10 degree temps, it is cold and with that comes the need to retreat into our own personal sanctuary. With at least 2-3 more months of wintry weather before a glimpse of spring, how do you feel about your nest? Here are a few makeover ideas to add some cozy comfort during this chilly season.
The hottest new paint colors for winter
-Want Color, color, color—try Aqua, sea green or turquoise to liven up your room and add an element of calmness and serenity to your home.
-Gray, is no longer the drab color of yesterday, with new shades shades like cathedral, silhouette, this trendy color works well with neutral and bright colors like yellow, blue or green.
-Green, is symbolic of growth and gives off a grounded effect in the home that can stand alone with simple or bold furniture.
-Purple, the most talked-about color of the season, is hot this season. Instead of the deep plums and standard purple hues, try shades of soft grape or hyacinth to set-off the living room or bedroom of your nest.
Last night I was on the phone with my friend, Natalie, and we got to talking about what we can and can not put up with in a relationship. Now my homie is married (another one bites the dust), and I am single in the city so our topic of conversation was mostly due to the much talked about Tiger Woods saga as well as general issues concerning the man/woman drama. Now Nat, who is the most open-minded and non-judgmental person I know, begins to vehemently state “I can not say I won’t take my husband back if he cheats but one thing I will not put up with is a whore.”
Because of all the new found allegations, 12 mistresses and the lack of condom use in the bedroom, Woods’ wife—if she so chooses —will get paid!! It has already started with the 5 million per/yr extra in the revamped pre-nup (cheaper to keeper I think?) and the photo spread she received in a popular magazine. Is it really gold-digging or just a matter of a woman scorned. After all Tiger is worth 400 million, his contracts are dropping like flies and his family life is in shambles—what would you do? One might think now is the best time to leave and collect or stay on that gravy train for a few more years.
Food, fireworks, beaches, or the freezing cold, cities around the world have their own special way to celebrate the end of one year and beginning of the next. Tired of the same ole New Years? Have you always wanted to get away and do something different? It’s not too late, whether you decide to stay stateside or travel overseas—here are 5 top cities to ring in the New Year!
Viva Las Vegas
For those who have paid a visit to Sin City, the temptation of club-hopping or hitting the casinos from dusk till dawn is a reality—but on NYE everyone celebrates. Party at one of the many hotels or hit the strip and countdown with strangers to the start of the New Year. Tired of the scene on the Vegas strip? Head to downtown Las Vegas to Fremont and see the live entertainment. Don’t forget to buy your lucky numbers, afterall its Vegas baby!
Rio de Janiero, Brazil
We all hear the stories about Rio de Janerio–guess what it’s all true! Host to some serious partiers—this South American hotspot is the place to be. Since its summer–the weather is sunny and warm weather in January! This NYE, buy that last-minute ticket to Rio and get more bang for your buck. Celebrating all day long, start off your day at the beach but once evening hits you will want to stop at Copacabana where the party rivals that of Brazil’s annual Carnaval. Thousands of people dress in white and throw flowers in the water for good luck in this dazzling and eccentric locale. In Rio, the fete doesn’t stop at midnight but goes on until it runs its zealous course.

We all know what going “raw dog” means from sexual escapades on TV– to artists rapping about “Oh baby I like it raw”. There are varying opinions on when to do away with condoms?. The thought of not using protection creates such strong opinions from people in serious relationships as well as those who are just “dating”. One thing is for sure, everyone has an opinion about when to scrap the thin layer of material that separates you from your partner. I often find that once you skip the glove, you almost never go back. We can all agree that it feels sooo good when you are flesh to flesh with someone–it definitely increases your sense of intimacy but ultimately–is it a good idea?
Of course, there is the potential unwarranted pregnancy, but what about the increased rate of HIV/AIDS among the sexually-active? Also with herpes on a rise and 1 in 4 people affected, why are so many of us still choosing the pill over the condom? I personally am afraid of what’s out there and as a single woman in the dating scene, the notion of having “relations” with someone new causes great concern. Sex has become a plan of action instead of spontaneous combustion. Conversations about one’s status has become as normal as ordering a Big Mac from McDonalds.
Brazil, here I come or at least I’ll travel to the East Village until I can make my way to South America. Last week, I ate at the casual, energetic hotbed Esperanto Restaurant located on 9th and Ave C. The food was an aromatic blend of Brazilian, Chilean and Peruvian cultures to entice customers from all ethnicity and tastes. With dishes served up with smiles and an atmosphere filled with music and laughter—how can one not catch Brazilian fever.
If you find yourself in Alphabet City, dip into this exotic locale with its green and yellow hues, bamboo chairs and Brazilian motifs adorning the walls. Whether you’re in the mood to dine or have a refreshing drink, try their house special Mojito Royal served with champagne, sagatiba, fresh passion fruit and mint lime.
Okay ladies we all hear the extenze commercials saying “it’s not the length but the width” and I must concur with this statement but umm..”What if it’s too big?” With song’s like Beyonce’s “Ego” and articles on the hype of having a big tool plus the many conversations with girlfriends about a man’s package, does it make it make sex better if he’s bigger? Now I’m all for it but is it that always true? Do women want that “good pain” on a consistent basis? I don’t know about my fellow XX chromosomes but I can work with a man that’s average. In my opinion, you can do more—the positions and sexual prowess are limitless, afterall on top is not a mad bull ride in Spain.
In a recent convo with my friend on the new guy in her life, size was definitely the first topic on the list:
“So how are things going with Mr. X?” (name withheld to protect the innocent)
