Got in-law problems? Who hasn’t?! In-law tension and conflict is an age old battle that will forge on in families for generations. The dynamics of merging two families together has always been a tricky and touch and go situation. Personally my in-law problems have been a roller coaster ride that I wouldn’t join the line at six flags to ride again! Or would I? This is coming from someone who has never been on a roller coaster! My relationship with my mother-in-law had me reflecting on what type of mother-in-law will I be to my future daughter-in-law. Would I make the same mistakes millions of mother-in-laws have made in the past? My sane-self shouts NOOOO!! I won’t be cause I am more self-aware, smarter, kinder, confident blah, blah, blah.
Well, just in case I lose my sanity and have a mid-life crisis by the time I have a daughter-in-law, here are top five mother-in-law mistakes that I should at least try to avoid making!!
Unsolicited Parenting Advice:
This is one thing that I know have annoyed daughter-in-laws for centuries — the parenting advice that you didn’t ask for. Unsolicited parenting advice from your mother-in-law can and will mostly likely be taken as criticism on how you have decided to raise your children. Solution: keep all parenting advice to yourself unless your daughter-in-law requests your input on a matter.
More than likely you’ve seen or heard about Bruce Jenner’s debut as a “woman” on the cover of Vanity Fair. The 65 year old former track and field star earned a gold medal in the 1976 Olympics, became the second athlete to grace the Wheaties cereal box, and fathered 6 children from 3 marriages.
Now, Bruce Jenner gets to live out his fantasy of being a woman. Soon Jenner will get to join a roughly estimated 700,000 Americans who have been assigned with a new gender. In the state of California, Jenner will be able to legally go from male to female on his driver’s license, birth certificate and other legal documents. Even his Wikipedia page has been carefully edited with the appropriate gender-specific pronouns. As a matter of fact, try searching for Bruce Jenner and Google will correct you with results showing “Caitlyn” (the correct name that Bruce will go by from now on).
Seemingly, our main stream media, his loved ones, doctors and so many impartial Americans have joined forces to make this man’s dream become a reality. During his cover story interview, Jenner revealed that he’s really looking forward to more girls’ nights.
“You can talk about outfits. You can talk about hair and makeup, anything you want. It becomes not a big deal,” Jenner told Vanity Fair.
In case you missed it, Kim Kardashian West revealed that she’s expecting a second baby during a teaser for the upcoming season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Now, everyone’s taking bets that the Wests will soon welcome a little South (insert trombone sound effect here) and reflecting on her best maternity looks.
But, let’s be honest. Kim Kardashian’s maternity style was not so good. Many of her outfit choices were simply unflattering, and the fact that she tried to wear regular clothing instead of maternity clothes should be a lesson to all expecting mommies.
Here are 3 things we can take away from Kim’s maternity style mistakes:
1. Maternity clothes exist for a reason so wear it. Buying a size or three bigger in regular clothes is not a good idea. During pregnancy, you typically appear larger in the tummy area so wearing a size 10 when you’re only a size 4 with a huge belly, will make you look awkward.
I’m from the island of Jamaica and like every Jamaican, I believe it’s the best place on earth (especially when it comes to vacations). I rarely venture out to any other island; mostly because of favoritism and love for my homeland. However, all of that changed during my recent visit to St. Lucia.
In case you’re not familiar with St. Lucia, it’s located in the eastern Caribbean just north of Barbados. With a relatively small population of 174,000, this tropical gem has a variety of quiet beaches and fishing villages as well as luxurious resorts.
I had the pleasure of staying at the Sandals Halcyon Beach Resort and Spa and must say it was the perfect choice for me. It was pure luxury from the exterior to interior. While Sandals boasts three all-inclusive resorts on the Island of St. Lucia, this resort is nestled in the midst of a tropical rainforest. Surrounded by mountains alongside a turquoise sea, it’s an intimate sanctuary which resonates the true meaning of the name Halcyon; which means calm, tranquil and peaceful. I needed to be pampered and this was it! The resort has been touted as “the Garden of Eden” with good reason! Its tropical gardens and inviting beaches had me in a trance.
Gone are the days when I would just throw on a pair of heels for work or simply because it complimented my outfit. These days, being comfortable is just as much of a requirement as being in the latest trend.
So imagine how excited I am that someone decided to take those awfully man-ish yet comfy Birkenstock sandals and make them cute! It’s really one of the hottest sandals this season, and you can have your pick of patent leather, floral, metallic and more. Even designers like Givenchy have copied the German shoemaker.
I try to avoid polishing my nails at home because it’s always a major fail. Between taking care of the kids and handling household chores, I could never complete both hands or even get them to fully dry without a smudge. On top of that, the darn polish only lasts for a day or two after all that work.
So a few weeks ago when I got the latest SinfulColors Spring Fever Collection, I was both excited and overwhelmed at the thought of taking on such a challenge. How would I make it to the second coat without Jordan needing a diaper change? Would I really have time to sit and wait for these nails to dry before getting a snack request from Blake?
I came across this recipe for vegan quiche during my recent visit to Whole Foods. I love a good quiche and just had to share with all my Meatless Mondays readers. This is a great addition to your summer brunch menu, and you can always freeze leftovers for Monday’s lunch or supper.
Share your pics of this recipe with us on Twitter by using hashtag #MeatlesswithNUBIA. I would love to know if you try other ingredients or variations to make it great!
I’m not saying that we shouldn’t wear short shorts, but no mother wants a crack or cheek exposed while out and about with her kids. Well, I know I don’t. Being able to move with ease or without a wardrobe malfunction, is even more important for moms with little ones.
When it comes to shorts, the Bermuda look is the way to go (and not just for moms). This summer, you’ll see trendy variations from designers like J Crew, J Brand and more. It’s a hot closet staple and the ultimate mommy shorts.
Now look, these are not the Bermuda shorts you wear with polo shirts and a fanny pack. You can find these shorts in many versions from denim to sequins; even some classic navy Bermuda shorts can take you from the company’s summer outing to a family fun day and then date night.
Here are some ideas on how to style your Bermuda shorts for any occasion…
Why am I surprised that Mother’s Day is the second highest gift giving holiday in the US (right behind Christmas)? I mean, it’s not like we expect some special treatment for growing human beings in our tiny uteruses. Right.
Well, now that we’re only 2 shopping days away from May 10th, I figure it’s a good idea to drop some helpful hints and tips about what we absolutely do not want for Mother’s Day.
While every other website is running slideshows of fabulous gift ideas for mothers of all manner and form, I just want to make it even easier.
The stuff that I’m about to mention, don’t get them. If you’re still clueless about what to get, it’s too late to try and figure it out. Gift cards and dinner reservations will work like a charm.
Here are my top 5 worst Mother’s Day ideas ever:
This top ten list is going to confuse some people as well as upset a lot of Beyonce fans, so let me explain. Every year the Costume Institute at the Met Museum holds this fundraiser which also kicks off its fashion exhibit.
This year’s theme was China Through the Looking Glass. Now, I’m just going to take a wild guess and say that people would be expected to wear Chinese inspired fashion…right?
Now, it’s not mandatory that celebrities go along with the theme but why not? Why not pay homage to the curators and everyone who went through the trouble of planning this exhibit and event? Why not do something fun and unique instead of your typical skin tight, see-through, red carpet look (Beyonce)?
With that said, here’s Rihanna and other celebrities who slayed on the red carpet by dressing to uphold the theme…
