I refuse to wear anything that’s not comfortable. Been there, done that. Plus, being a mom of two overly active kids means that I am always on the go. Comfort and style are equally important to me, and I can’t have one without the other. This is why I love the high waist shorts trend! Unlike low rise shorts, you’ll never have to worry about exposing too much in the back or any bulging around the waistline.
As with any trend, I have two basic rules — avoid looking like a teenybopper by selecting an age appropriate version AND never spend too much on pieces that you will only wear a couple times.
I found really stylish high waist shorts that have a classic appeal and all for under $50. Dress it up with a blazer, crop top and heels or pair it with a graphic tee or button down shirt for a casual/everyday look.

Opinions are like belly buttons and _______ (fill in the blank). Everyone’s got one. That’s why I rarely spend time arguing pointless matters, especially on Facebook. However, I was a little…no I was very disturbed by a comment from another mother regarding the breastfeeding graduate.
If you’ve been out of the social media loop, the above photo of a mother breastfeeding her baby during her college graduation recently went viral. Karlesha Thurman, who graduated from the State University of California, told Today.com that she didn’t think twice about nursing her baby and “did it to show it’s natural, it’s normal, there’s nothing wrong with it.”
The reaction from some women and men on social media has been negative. It was inappropriate. She’s weird. Why did she have to breastfeed her baby during a graduation? Well, as a mom who breastfed two children, the answer is simple. The kid was hungry and that’s what mothers do when their babies are hungry. They feed them.
I’ve had to breastfeed my kids on an airplane, at the car dealership, on the beach, in the bathroom at church…wherever and whenever they decided it was time for a meal. Now, I admit that I’ve always tried to drape myself and not expose too much. But, clearly the recent college grad was trying to make a statement and a positive one at that. So why are so many people (in particularly women) uncomfortable with seeing a mother breastfeed her baby. That one disturbing comment that motivated me to write this post explains it ALL.
HOW TO WEAR THIS SUMMER’S ANKLE BOOTIES
It’s almost the official start of summer, and I wanted to write about the cute dresses, shorts and sandals that are out this season. Then my friend Lorna mentioned her fashion dilemma. She has been traveling between Florida and New York for work and was confused about what to pack. “Nicky, why do I see people in New York wearing boots in June?” she asked.
Well, the weather has been bipolar all over. One day it’s 90 degrees, the next day it’s chilly and raining. This is not your typical summer and therefore, you won’t see the typical summer staples in stores either.
The ankle boots/booties kind of crossed over into spring/summer due to the up and down temps. But, it’s also that cute, rockstar chic look that almost everyone loves. Whether you go with casual and comfy flat biker booties or a sophisticated peep-toe bootie, you can pair them with a variety of ensembles this summer.
Here are my favorite ways to wear summer booties:
Some people might think that I’m slightly OCD, but I’m really just meticulous about every aspect of my life. Hence, the reason why I love PINTEREST! What woman wouldn’t?? We take on so many roles in our everyday lives that it’s nice to have a place to organize and gather our thoughts. Whether I’m planning a birthday party for the kids, looking for home decor ideas or sometimes drafting my next blog post, PINTEREST is my first step to getting started.
Now that I’ve moved to Atlanta, I’m up all night pinning ideas for my new home and my new summer wardrobe. I’ve repinned some very cute summer white outfits that I think you will love. Follow me on PINTEREST to see these style inspirations and if you haven’t signed up yet, please get your life together and start PINNING!
My daughter Blake pretty much inherited my hair. Now, I truly empathize with my mother who had to rely on a jar of Dax and/or pressing comb to help tame my gigantic hair.
Every Saturday morning feels like a science experiment. I am constantly trying new products in hopes that it will make her hair more manageable and the process less stressful. She screams, she cries and even throws up sometimes. These panic attacks might also be hereditary because I was the same as a child.
Needless to say, I hopped, skipped and jumped at the opportunity to try Curlkit! Curlkit is an easy way to try out new products and find what’s best for your hair. Each month the box is delivered to your door with full size and sample size products. The subscription fee is $20 per month and not bad considering the cost of natural/organic hair products. The box came filled with goodies including a full size shampoo, curl hydration spray, styling custard and 8 trial size treatments, conditioners etc.
Because she has so much hair that comes with so much drama, I typically do double strand twists that last all week or an overnight twist out for more defined curls. Either way, it takes about 3 to 4 hours and not the best options if I’m pressed for time or simply exhausted.
So I decided to put Curlkit to the ultimate test and the results were amazing. I was able to achieve that cute curly fro (pic above) in under 2 hours with enough time to get everyone ready and out the door for an afternoon event. I absolutely love Curlkit and now that I’ve discovered all these great products, I’m thinking about going natural!
Here’s what I used to get the look:

I’ve been on a short hiatus but so excited to be back and blogging from Atlanta! Although I’ll always be a New Yorker (Jamaican) at heart, my husband and I decided it was time to move our family to greener pastures. And I mean that literally. I’m currently blogging from the window seat of my soon-to-be furnished office with a view of the woods.
It’s the perfect scenery to let a writer’s imagination run wild. The kids no longer have to leave home to enjoy a playground, park or pool, and we’re taking full advantage of an at home gym with no membership fees.
So far it’s been a great move for my family and the best place for a mommy/lifestyle blogger with two tots because 1) I have so many trendy shops, spas and restaurants right outside my gates 2) getting around with my 4 yr old and 1 yr old is so much easier with all these kid-friendly places AND 3) I have so much to explore in Atlanta and thrilled that I can share it with you all!
Stay tuned xox
5 SPRING PIECES YOU CAN WEAR NOW
Why does it feel like the coldest and longest winter ever? I say we just kick-off spring before it actually gets here. With so many hot denim trends for next season, you can wear them now despite these frigid temps.
Here are my favorite denim pieces for this spring:
1) THE MIDI JEANS SKIRT — Wear it now with a crop sweater and ankle booties. Top Shop midi acid wash jeans skirt shown above retails for $52.
2) THE OVERSIZED TRUCKER JACKET — Wear it now over a mini sweater dress with over the knee boots. The R13 trucker jacket shown above will run over $700. The tapered shoulders and arms give this jacket a unique fit, but you can get an almost similar look for around $40.
3) THE BOYFRIEND JEANS — Wear it now with a chunky cardigan, tank top and booties. J Brand jeans shown above goes for $255.
4) THE DENIM GILET — Wear it now over a long sleeved turtle neck and skinny jeans. Mango denim biker gilet shown here retails at $59.99
5) THE DENIM BASEBALL CAP — Wear it now as an edgy accessory with almost any everyday ensemble. Levi’s denim baseball cap shown here is only $18.00 at Levi.com.
Let’s be real. Who’s really excited about fall 2014 right now? With the current weather situation, I know you’re hardly dreaming of what coats, boots and sweaters to wear for yet another cold season. Even the celebrities at New York Fashion Week are desperately seeking spring.
Check out how Kelly Rowland, Solange Knowles and others are heating up fashion week and NYC with the most stylish spring trends
Solange Knowles showed everyone how to do color blocking the right way as she sat front row at Milly by Michelle Smith. I just love this chick and the fact that she refuses to be boxed into any one category when it comes to fashion. Those pink lips will be all the rage next season.
Kelly Rowland appropriately showed up at the Opening Ceremony fashion show wearing the brand’s printed pants suit and matching tee. It’s a bit over the top but I do like the print. Btw, didn’t I call it when I said bobs would be the hottest hairstyle this spring?
