I’m so excited that summer is officially here, but along with that comes the daunting task of switching up my beauty routine. As soon as I get one regimen down, here comes another season and more products to buy.
For the past year, I’ve become fully committed to finding more natural and healthier ways of eating and taking care of myself. And so, this summer I plan on using more homemade remedies.
Here are some of my tried and true beauty fixes that you can grab straight from your kitchen. When you think about all the money it costs for some of those manufactured products, these DIY ideas are definitely worth the try.
Lemon Juice for Oily Skin
The secret to keeping your face shine-free this summer is a freshly squeezed lemon! Not only is lemon juice a great astringent, but it also helps to brighten skin and reduce discoloration. Just one teaspoon of lemon juice and one-half teaspoon of distilled water will help to improve your skin tone and decrease oiliness.
It seems like my hair grew so much faster with a relaxer but shrinkage will create that illusion. I’ve been transitioning for a year and have not used any heat for over 6 months. Hence, it’s hard to say exactly how many inches I’ve grown so far. At this point, I’m learning not to focus so much on length.
I’ve always had long hair and could never image myself with short hair. So, imagine my struggle of having to cut so many inches during this transition. The good news is I’m half way there, and I’m even more motivated now that I can see my real curl pattern!
Another bit of encouragement came through a conversation with another natural while shopping at the mall. She did the big chop about a year ago and shared stories about her trials and triumphs of going natural. I realized that I was making good progress and managed to keep my hair pretty healthy during this transitioning period.
Now that the holidays are behind us, now is the time to focus on YOU! All the things we enjoy about the holidays, such as entertaining, gift shopping, and redecorating, can translate into a lot stress.
That’s why the beginning of the year is always a great time to unwind and enjoy a relaxing spa treatment. Plus, the damaging effects of winter on your skin calls for some extra TLC.
Here are a few winter skincare treatments to try at home or at the spa:

Waste not, want not. That’s what grandma used to say, so don’t you dare throw out the unused contents in your pantry or refrigerator before cooking up some beauty recipes in our 5 step homemade facial. Let your leftovers come to life with an easy guide that will save you tons of money and a visit to the spa!
Step 1: Cleanse – You can’t start a facial without a clean palate. Wipe off the makeup and debri from a long night of cocktails and fratenizing and gently cleanse your skin with 1/2 a fresh squeezed
lemon and water. Lemon has natural antiseptic properties and will give your skin a fresh, clean feel.
Step 2: Tone – Put your skin on a low-cholesterol diet with an egg white mask as your toner. Take the egg white from 1 egg and gently spread on the face using circular motions from your chin until you reach your forehead; always remembering to circle up to prevent wrinkles. Wash thoroughly with cool water.
Step 3: Exfoliate – Mix in 1/4 cup brown sugar with 2 tbsps of olive oil for a natural exfoliator that will help eliminate dead skin cells and allow fresh skin to reach the surface revealing new, clear, bright skin. Lightly exfoliate in upward motions. Scrubing too much or too hard can damage the skin and cause scarring so be sure to be gentle. Cleanse with a hot towel until all residue is removed. Finish by applying a warm towel and holding for 30 seconds
Note: For oily, sensitive or acneic skin, omit this step.

There is no such thing as instant gratification when it comes to getting or maintaining naturally healthy skin and hair. You can’t go to a plastic surgeon for a procedure and you can’t buy a “fix it” pill that will turn dull, abused and neglected skin into a glowing spectacle overnight. With a little bit of time and undying commitment you can transform your skin this Spring with our recommended naturally beauty fixes.
You’ve heard the saying: “You are what you eat.” And it is true. What we put in our bodies greatly influences the appearance of our skin and hair health. Instantly improve the look of your skin by changing your diet and purging any destructive lifestyle habits by incorporating foods high in anti-oxidants (blueberries, strawberries, green tea), essential fatty-acids (salmon, walnuts, canola oil and flax seed) and whole grains (wheat bread and cereals). Smoking, drugs, a high-fat diet and an overall unhealthy lifestyle not only contributes to sallow skin and hair, but also diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease amongst many others.
Remember your alphabet when choosing supplements. Vitamin’s A, B, C, and E are the best natural beauty enhancers that you can get from food or food-based vitamins.
As much as we love getting pampered at the salon and spa, those frequent visits can become a hefty expense. If you have the patience to administer at-home treatments, you can easily save extra cash for the holidays and trips to the salon/spa.
These Do-It-Yourself treatments have been developed by some of the top beauty brands and promises to give you great results for less than what you would typically pay a professional. Plus, they’re all available at our trusted beauty retailer – Sephora!
