The Pill turns 50 on May 9th!! The irony—its on Mother’s Day. Who would have thought that this little tablet approved by the Food & Drug Administration, approved in 1960, would change the lives of women forever? The creation of the pill wasn’t a matter of XY chromosomes becoming “promiscuous or loose” as many critics preached but a sense of female liberation. The right to our own reproductive choices, the right to be in charge of our own bodies, the right to choose a career over motherhood—or at least postpone it a bit.
With over 100 million women world-wide affected by this medical breakthrough, how can we not celebrate it? In honor of the 50th anniversary, CBS aired a segment on the impact birth control pills had on society and what it means to women of the past, present and future!
WHAT’S NEXT: Maybe a male contraceptive—now that may be a hard pill to swallow, but you never know?
Fellas, would you take a male contraceptive pill? Ladies, how has the pill liberated you?
Mother’s Day is fast approaching and each year I wonder what gift to get my mom to show my love and appreciation for all she does. After pondering for a few days, I decided to ditch the standard flowers, perfume gift sets or jewelry and get her something different. Here are a few unique Mother’s Day gifts you can get that special mom in your life that she’s sure to love and remember:
1. Housekeeping Services–there isn’t enough hours in the day, so help her out with a full-service cleaning package, she will thank you for months to come! (My mom is going to love me even more for this one).
How many of you remember the scene in “When Harry Met Sally,” when Meg Ryan fakes the big “O” in a diner, to show how easy it is for a woman to do. According to our favorite TV M.D.–Dr. Oz, she’s not the only one–reports state that 65% of women fake orgasms. I never understood why females over the age of 21 fake it. What does this really accomplish, except to stroke the male ego and leave you wanting some good lovin’? Is making your partner feel “like the man,” worth you not getting sexual gratification?
Ever since ‘French Paradox’ papers were published in 1991 about the benefits of red wine, consumers believe it’s the only one that’s good for you. There has been much talk about the health benefits of red versus white wine. Over the years red grapes has been linked to words like antioxidants (flavanoids and resveratrol), polyphenols (which protects against cardiovascular disease), fewer calories, reduction in heart disease, cancer and the aging process—damn, no wonder the French are so healthy! But what about white wine, are there any health benefits for these grapes.
Considering white wine is my favorite (i.e. Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, or Riesling), I went on a search for the truth about wine and here’s what I discovered:
1. Just because red wine is high in antioxidants doesn’t mean that white grapes doesn’t have any. Like red wine, white wine consumed in moderation, can reduce bad cholesterol and act as an anti-coagulant or blood clotting preventative
I hate this phrase. Honestly, what does “it’s complicated” mean? Does it mean, she’s preggo but I’m not sure the baby’s mine or “we are still sleeping together but not a couple?” I have a hard time with this new concept, especially, if you don’t share assets or a child together. What is so complicated about it? Even Facebook has an “it’s complicated” option under relationship status.
This is a pure cop out! In my opinion, this phrase is used to avoid a possible commitment or when you want to have your cake and eat it too. I can be a very black and white and when its over I am pretty much done. There’s no complication, no hanging on for months or years—its cold turkey baby! Am I jaded by my own views of relationships? Is there really a “complicated” factor?
How do you feel about the “it’s complicated” excuse? Do you use this term to describe your relationship? If so, why?
Caribbean Cuisine with a French Flair
The light island vibe and airy atmosphere is what, next to the food, makes Arcane (111 Avenue C, bet. 7th & 8th St) a great place to eat, drink and reminisce about your vacations to Turks & Caicos, St. Maarten or better yet Guadeloupe!
New Yorkers Benjamin and Christine, part of the Guadeloupe-raised brother-and-sister team, spent their younger years in French island—and thank you for it! This year-old Alphabet City gem invites you into the dim lighting, rustic ambiance, soft music with a friendly staff that helps you select from a menu full of French Caribbean delights.
Sugar, sugar, and more sugar!! In 2009, more than 50% of all Americans consume one-half pound of sugar per day, which equals a whopping 180 pounds of sugar per year! The recent campaign in obesity has bought the use of sugar to the forefront. Celebs from Ellen DeGeneres to Kelly Rowland have cut out this sweet-treat from their diets. Many of us are get our high from the sugar rush and the thought of not eating sugar for 24 hours can cause a cold sweat that leaves them shaking in the corner waiting for another fix. Does this sound like you?
A few years ago, I was in-lust with a co-worker. I mean serious bathroom, office action and it was so good. Unfortunately, at the time, I didn’t think about the consequences of my actions. What if, we break up, how will I handle the situation? What if our colleagues found out? Eventually, we ended the relationship, without malice but things definitely could have been a lot worse.
Workplace romance can start in many ways, from groaning about your boss and low pay to organizational restructuring. Whatever the cause, it can lead to ups and downs. Yes it can be fun and exciting when you brush up against each other, or share intimate looks on the low but is it really worth the drama? There are some people who find their future spouse at work but that’s rare.
Summer is on its way and with the warm weather comes all the things we love and hate about our bodies. All women are not created equal, and therefore we’re not built to fit a fashion-model size. With that said, you can’t change from one body type to another but can improve your shape and make the best of your body through a healthy lifestyle (i.e. exercise, eating habits), that will enhance your longevity and appearance.
Did you know the average American woman is a size 12 to 14? There are more hips, thighs and behinds walking around than narrow and lean. Don’t be fooled, even women who are a size 2 have insecurities. For tips on how to love the body you have and not the one you wish you had, I turned to Katy Goshtasbi, Founder Puris Image & Style and style consultant for advice so we can all love our bodies!!
1. Be realistic about whether you are really going to lose the weight you want now! Don’t lie to yourself, if you are not already on a diet/weight loss plan and won’t be on one in the next month, then be honest and move forward. If so, then dress to your current body weight and realize that you can be beautiful and love your body and shape at your current weight.
