I don’t know about all of you but I am tired of the rainy, hot then cold weather that comes with spring. With Memorial Day approaching and some days still feeling like winter, I found a few last minute travel deals to help you shake off the dampness and escape to some sunshine. Whether it’s a bed & breakfast in Maine, family fun at Disney, partying in Las Vegas or relaxing on the beach in Jamaica, travelers can shop around for bargains and find fantastic deals to some of the most coveted hotspots. What’s even better news is that it’s actually less expensive to travel overseas than right here in the U.S.A. Domestic fares are only down 10%, while some European locales are down 20%!
Here are a few helpful hints to get you on your way to Cali, Paris or anywhere in between this Memorial weekend Continue Reading →
Summer always reminds me of Will Smith’s 90’s hit rap song “Summertime”. It’s almost here when the temp spikes to a sticky, sweltering, sizzling, blazing 90 degrees as we pack away the spring jackets, sweaters, and long sleeves and break out the skirts, shorts and sandals. Men go shirtless just to show off their six packs and women strut around displaying their assets on the hunt for some summer love. The heat in the air permeates throughout our bodies and you realize there’s just something about the summertime that stirs your passion. The possibilities of new love or lust are a delightful distraction from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Last night, I was watching re-runs of the TV show Girlfriends and had an Epiphany—I am Joan. Crazy, psycho, well-meaning but can’t keep a man Joan. Like Joan, I created this little 90-day rule about sex. Now as you all know, I am currently dating someone who I find intriguing. This is quite a feat for me since I don’t meet many men who I want to spend my time with. Therefore, it came as a surprise when I decided to wait. So far he’s cool about it. Don’t get me wrong he is sexy as hell (to me anyway), we have great convo, he opens doors and treats me with respect.
I can’t believe my discipline but don’t get it twisted my mind and body are at war. One night after a great date and extreme frustration, I had to ask myself how long is too long? It’s been a long couple of months but, in my mind, I hear “stop acting like a cat in heat and chill.” It doesn’t help that I have a tendency to get my cheap feels here and there.
So what’s my problem? Honestly, I am trying to take a different approach on this dating thing? You know, get to know a brotha before dropping my Vicki’s. Who knows…what do you guys think? Does that make me a tease? Am I playing hard to get or just insane? What’s the longest/shortest you ever waited?
GET BEACH BODY READY WITH NUBIA – WEEK 2
It’s just too good to resist? So delicious it’s almost sinful? You know it will leave you feeling guilty and pounds heavier — but can’t say no. Let me help you to put down the cheeseburger and pick up the carrot sticks!
Last week, we promised to bring you an update on our fitness and nutrition routine with our trainer, Alethia, from the Printing House Fitness and Squash Club. We talked about the overall body assessment, strength and flexibility test, weight strengthening and cardio. This week, we focused on nutrition and eating habits. This is a harder feat considering that the NUBIA ladies never refuse a good cocktail, especially when it’s a French martini. To top it off, we’re notorious for making 4 am detours to somebody’s diner after a night on the town. What can I say? We will miss the cheese omelets, pancakes, home fries, Buffalo wings, turkey burgers and martinis. Alethia made it clear that there must be no cheating, if we want to see results. To be exact, this is a life-changing process not a diet (whatever). So, here are some nutritional tips from Alethia, as you travel with us on this six week, sometimes bland, journey to health, nutrition and that darn summer bikini.
1. Never skip a meal. Food is fuel for your metabolism and I guess the phrase “food for the soul” may just work here.
2. Eat six times a day, that breakdown to three meals and two snacks. A snack does not include chocolate cookies but perhaps a yogurt –maybe.
3. Stay away from white carbs such as white bread, white rice…you all get the idea right? Instead, eat whole grains like whole wheat pasta and bread.
I have some fantastic news! One of the perks of being the life and style editor for NUBIA Mag is scoring personal training sessions with Alethia Osborne-Foyle, and I wanted to share my journey to getting beach body glam with you as well as the rest of the NUBIA team! As I bring you tips on getting closer to your ideal summer body, we will all be working it out with Alethia at the Printing House Fitness & Squash Club. So for the next few weeks, NUBIA will get bootylicious as I bring you the good, bad, ugly and definitely clumsy moments of our weekly workout routine. Follow us with for your own do-it-yourself summer workout plan
To begin our training sessions, Mika, Nat, Nicky and I had to perform a gruesome Body Age assessment test. This tool is to help our trainer determine our fitness history, fitness level (aka: how outta shape we are) and measure the link between your physiological age (healthy functions of the body) to your biological age (how old our asses really are). The results which I am ashamed to share are based on exercise history, eating habits, strength, and flexibility. Cardio tests, body fat assessments, and flexibility training were also conducted. We talked about our individual goals and basic workout routines from cardio to weight strengthening.
Personally, I don’t care what anyone says—this one-hour assessment test was a workout. My muscles were on fire and I was hurting in places I didn’t know I had. We were challenged to do routines a couple of us never really practiced before. She had us doing push-ups, sit-ups, bicep curls (to see how much we could left) and a cardio workout on what we thought was this effort-less looking (yeah right) aerobic step platform for three minutes. Afterwards, with all our info calculated in this machine, Alethia can now put together a combination exercise plan to hit all our target points and hopefully (if we don’t cheat) meet our body-sculpting goals. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for next week—whatever it is I’m very afraid.
We know you ladies have your own personal questions about nutrition and fitness that may not be answered in these weekly posts. So for the next six weeks, Ask Alethia anything that’s on your mind from eating red meat to prenatal workouts, she’ll give you the info and more…
So until next week, be good and don’t cheat!
I am a travel fiend. I’m always on travel sites and making mental notes of the best deals and hotspots for the year. With the economy in such a mess and lack of tourism to some of the world’s most coveted locales, hotels and airlines are enticing travelers through special deals and incentives. So, it was during one of my “I need to get away before I go crazy” travel pangs that I discovered the newest 2009 Latin American hotspot—Costa Rica! I have always wanted to visit this small tucked-away tropical location but never had the opportunity. My ready-to-go nature made me continue my research and was a bit surprised by my findings. The spectacular mountains and volcanoes provide dramatic views of the horizon.

We all know Steve Harvey as an original member of the Kings of Comedy and morning radio talk show host, but he recently wrote a amusing yet no-nonsense book about a man’s view on love, relationships, intimacy and commitment -“Act Like a Lady, Think like a Man”. As an insatiable listener to his morning talk show and the Strawberry Letter, I couldn’t wait for the book to hit the stands. After reading it, I discovered that during my 10+ years in the dating biz– what I thought I knew — I really had no idea. No idea how simple men really are. They are so uncomplicated that we become complicated for them. Seriously, if men knew what women thought about on a daily basis–their heads would hurt.
Still not convinced, check out the video of Harvey on the Tyra Banks Show.
GET BEACH-BODY GLAM IN 6 WEEKS
With 60 days left till summer and a trip to St. Thomas only 2 weeks away, I’ve been scrambling to lose those extra 10lbs that seemed to have crept its way to my mid-section, thighs and butt during the last few months. My sinful desire for the creamy taste of Haagen Dazs cookies n’ cream (yummy) has added to my growing sense of bathing-suit anxiety.
Knowing I’m not alone, I turned to our friend and personal trainer, Alethia Osbourne-Foyle, to give us all some tips on how to tone up and sleek down in just 6 weeks. Alethia has traveled the world playing women’s basketball and is now a trainer at NYC’s Printing House Fitness and Squash Club. Ladies, believe me when I tell you she know her ish and will crack that whip to get her clients in shape. But, remember she is only responsible for what goes down on her clock, so the four French martini’s you consumed at the club in one night is on you.
Don’t fear. Each week NUBIA will bring you exercise tips to help you get into that insy, weensy, teeny, weenie, yellow polka dot bikini. Here are a few simple tips she suggests to help you get started… Continue Reading →
I am no dating guru, but yes I would say I have an open mind. So open, in fact, that I have joined a few dating sites (please don’t tell anyone). Although, I still avoid the dreaded blind dates. We single ladies are familiar with the blind dates our “in-relationship” friends try to arrange because you absolutely must be as happy as they are. However, I recently participated in this new age dating method called Speed Dating. What is that you ask? This is where 8 men and 8 women engage in a face-to-face, 2 minute, getting-to-know-you conversation before they SWITCH!
