A Classy –Not Stuffy – Taste of Italian in Midtown
By Miss Jane
Visiting Bice Ristorante , one might think you’d need to wear a jacket and tie or a T-length dress, with its white-clothed tabletops and formal staff, but this Italian bistro offers a classy eating experience without the stuffy factor.
Family friendly, this Midtown eatery is great for a dinner after a movie or show or even a casual first date. The appetizer and entrée menus offer a diverse range of American and Italian fare, and more than 40 wines to enjoy with your meal.
The pasta and bread is made fresh and the menu boasts many standout dishes. Starting with appetizers, I greatly enjoyed the tuna tartar with cucumber avocado in soy and mango vinaigrette; the Long Island crab cakes with chipotle tartar sauce and cole slaw; and the lobster salad–the special of the day when I visited—which included Maine lobster served with avocado tomato arugula, and mixed veggies in an orange lime dressing. The crab cakes were fresh and well-seasoned, accompanied by the creamy tartar sauce, and the salad was crisp and refreshing with a touch of lime adding a citrus treat for my taste buds.
For main dishes, I greatly enjoyed the lamb chops in sweet garlic sauce, which was served with roasted potatoes and veggies. The veal and parma ham ravioli with black truffle, rosemary, and demi-glace sauce was also delicious and hearty. If you have a taste for seafood, I highly recommend the seafood ravioli laced with lobster bisque and crab meat and served in a creamy tomato-like sauce.
My guest loved the braised veal shank, which was served with Parmesan risotto and herb gremolata made with lemon zest, garlic, and parsley. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the risotto was a great dish to enjoy with it.
If you decide to bring kids and all of these dishes sound a little too fancy, the Chittarruci Freschi alla Bolognese, or fresh spaghetti pasta with meat sauce is a great pick.
And another great perk about a BICE experience: If you’re a vegetarian, dishes can be made to order. Just ask the very courteous and accommodating wait staff!
The restaurant often has specials of the day, changing up the menu offerings to give you a diverse taste of dishes.
Don’t leave without finishing off your meal with Bice’s exquisite cheesecake, so moist and delicious, served with a mango sauce and fresh berries. The gelato and sorbet, as well as the Bice-style tiramisu with creme anglaise, are also winners.
All in all, my guest and I left with full satisfied stomachs and plans to return soon
