This is by far one of my all-time favorite reviews. Any time I don’t have to leave Brooklyn for a quality dining experience — one that doesn’t include questionable seating and plastic utensils — is an experience I thoroughly enjoy.

Los Mariachis, a restaurant that serves authentic Mexican cuisine, offers just that kind of exceptional experience. I was blown away by multicolored décor that had me feeling like I was vacationing in beautiful Puebla. Vibrant and exquisitely detailed, the chairs and tables were handmade (and shipped from Mexico). The restaurant’s gem is its mosaic tile artwork, featured prominently in the dining area.

With an extensive 5-page menu, there’s something for everyone, from the vegetarian friend to the picky child. Everything is categorized by the fillings–fresh produce, pork, chicken, beef, lamb, goat, seafood—and the options are quite limitless, from tacos, burritos and stuffed peppers to stews, sandwiches, pizzas, and grilled platters.

The restaurant has a fully-stocked bar that includes wine and beer. My guest and I decided to start with the customer favorite — which quickly became a new favorite of mine and my guest: their signature strawberry margarita. It had the perfect mix of fruit and tequila and was sizable enough to be satisfied with just one.

After munching on chips with homemade salsa and sour cream, we decided to go for variety and have the Cazuela Poblana tacos, which included tender chicken fillings served hot in a mini pot. The first was shredded, cooked in fresh spices and onions. The second was served in a creamy, cheesy sauce, and the third had a tantalizing brown sauce topped with sesame seeds.

All fillings were flavorful and more than enough to share between two people. We enjoyed our tacos as we sipped our margaritas, and sang along to our favorite songs— a playlist of music that included hits by Mexican-American pop icon Selena— that added that extra fun factor to our girls night out.

For dessert, we had flan, something my guest and I aren’t usually too keen on but fell in love with. The consistency was similar to cheese cake and melted right in your mouth.

Extra perk: You can enjoy a live mariachis band on the weekends and all dishes are accompanied by complimentary chips with fresh salsa, sour cream and guacamole.

Whether it’s a date night, a friend’s birthday, or dinner with the family, Los Mariachis is like the perfect escape to authentic Mexico—right in the heart of Brooklyn.
