Hyper-pigmentation and acne scars can be annoying little pests that make a home on your face without as much of a hint of disappearing. If you’re like me and have tried many different do it yourself fade creams, peels and exfoliation that didn’t work, you probably wouldn’t be convinced that any other product on the market is really worth its weight.

Fortunately, I was given the opportunity to use a new line of products from two facial plastic surgeons out of Beverly Hills. Doctors Peyman Solieman and Jason Litner created JolieMD Metamorphosis, a two-step system for ethnic skin that diminishes wrinkles, pigmentation and reduces acne while calming the triggers of new discoloration including inflammation and sun damage. With continued use over six weeks you will begin to notice a difference in your skin.
In addition to experiencing the products first hand, I also sat down with the doctors to learn more about this new treatment:

JolieMD is a new line of skin care products that target ethnic skin types. As plastic surgeons what experiences led you to develop this line and how do they address the needs of women of color?

As facial plastic surgeons, one of our main specialties is rhinoplasty, especially ethnic rhinoplasty- so we are very used to seeing African American, Latin, and Middle Eastern women and having to deal not only with their surgical concerns but also overlying skin concerns from acne and hyperpigmentation to wrinkles and sunspots. Moreover, on a more personal level JolieMD was created by us specifically with ethnic skin at the forefront in our minds because Dr Solieman wanted to find a better way to help his girlfriend who happens to be African American deal with her occasional breakouts and resulting hyperpigmentation.

We saw that most conventional skin care approached excessive pigmentation with the idea of bleaching it away, usually with hydroquinone as the only ingredient. As many women of color know, your skin needs a break from hydroquinone every so often to minimize side effects. Because hydroquinone only suppresses new pigment production and doesn’t address the root triggers, breakouts and inflammation, most women find that their pigmentation problems just come back as soon as they stop the hydroquinone product..

Many women of color have had experience with products that promise to correct pigmentation issues but failed to meet our expectations, what makes your products effective?

We take a different approach to pigmentation entirely- it is not about spot treatment or bleaching. It is simply about achieving the healthiest, most beautiful skin you can have. We understand that women of color don’t want to bleach their skin, but are really looking to even out pigmentation and reduce their need for cover up. As a result, Metamorphosis was designed so women can use a simple 2 step approach that works for them, and stay on it long term to not only achieve beautiful skin but maintain it as well. And, unlike hydroquinone products, the product is safe for continuous use; there is no need to stop or take breaks.

How do the ingredients in your products differ from typical products on the market now? Are they safe for my skin and hypo-allergenic? While formulating, we were determined to create a product that was truly safe and effective for any and all skin types. So, we took into account that women of color are more sensitive to the effects of potentially irritating ingredients and we left them out.

For women that have had years of inflammation and discoloration will JolieMD still be just as effective?

Absolutely. Most women have had years of inflammation and discoloration from acne, sun, and hormonal effects. Excessive pigmentation is not something that happens overnight and it won’t go away overnight either. While treating the most stubborn pigmentation concerns will take time, our clinical study found that almost all women using Metamorphosis saw the benefits of improved acne, discoloration, wrinkles, and skin texture within six weeks and reported overall healthier, more vibrant skin which we know continues to only get better with continued use.
