A few years ago, I was in-lust with a co-worker. I mean serious bathroom, office action and it was so good. Unfortunately, at the time, I didn’t think about the consequences of my actions. What if, we break up, how will I handle the situation? What if our colleagues found out? Eventually, we ended the relationship, without malice but things definitely could have been a lot worse.

Workplace romance can start in many ways, from groaning about your boss and low pay to organizational restructuring. Whatever the cause, it can lead to ups and downs. Yes it can be fun and exciting when you brush up against each other, or share intimate looks on the low but is it really worth the drama? There are some people who find their future spouse at work but that’s rare.

In the end, an office fling can create an awkward feeling for both parties involved. The pressure to keep the behavior a secret from colleagues often causes its demise. Here are some ways to deal with the office hook-up in case you end up on the desk with your co-worker.

1. Of course something shady is going on with the daily lunches, closed-door meetings and constant e-mails. Instead of sharing jokes only the two of you laugh over, skip the everyday meals and eat at your desk or invite another co-worker out—it just may limit the office gossip.

2. It’s easy to fall into bed with the hot new marketing or web guy after a few happy-hour cocktails but facing them in the morning—is not so easy. Keep in mind that things look different when you’re sober. If you know you’re super-attracted to Mr. X, then limit your alcohol intake and make your choice when you are more rational.

3. Unless you can deal with the awkwardness of an office affair– its best to just not have one. Honestly, there is a reason office-mate romances are taboo and kept a secret from others. Why put in yourself in the position to be talked about. Lust from afar and picture him/her when you’re in bed alone.

Have you ever had an office romance? How did it end? Did it become a full-blown relationship? If it ended, was it on good terms? Do you still work with that person?
