A few months ago I went to a yoga class and realized what I’ve known all along—YOGA bores me to tears. It was so bad that almost 15 minutes into the class, I walked over to the waiting area, sat down on a mat and waited for my friend to finish the class. I do not understand the yoga hype and all that breathing into core , exhale, feel your core tighten stuff was getting on my last nerves. Honestly, I could not relax with that incessant waterfall background noise and the instructor’s  chatter.

Now Pilates, I can get down with. I love the constant movement and action with this class. Yes you’re tightening your core but without all the yoga drama.

Both workouts help to stretch and sculpt your entire body, just take a look at Sting and Madonna. However, finding the right fit for your body and personality is the real challenge. Here are some ways to tell if you are a yoga or Pilates kind-of-gal.

1. Yoga has a philosophical, spiritual focus that is steeped in ancient Indian culture and takes on a holistic practice.  It unites the mind, body and spirit through exercise, breathing and meditation.

2. Beyond exercise, yoga is a lifestyle, while Pilates has 6 key modified principles to aid in body strengthening.
3. The focus of Pilates is more on physical conditioning to help improve such areas as deep core strength, muscle control, flexibility, coordination, and body tone, while producing long, lean muscle.
4. Pilates can be completed on a mat, or on specialized equipment such as the Reformer, which includes pulleys, springs and weight resistance to build strength.
5. If you’re seeking inner tranquility and fitness, yoga is the way to go. If you want to condition the body sans spirituality, then Pilates is your best option. If they both seem like a fit—then do both!
