Every mom will agree that pregnancy is one of the most amazing experiences in a woman’s life. But, it never really feels that way when you’re living in the moment! To be honest, there’s nothing blissful about raging hormones, morning sickness and weight gain in all the wrong places.
Don’t get me wrong. At some point, you find a nice balance somewhere between overabundant love for your little one and all those darn side effects. However, pregnancy can be so overwhelming that some expecting mommies forget to take care of themselves in the process.
One of the biggest signs of neglect is everyday attire. Being pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t look fashionable or have to buy everything three sizes bigger. In fact, many popular designers now have maternity lines and offer more form-fitting clothing to show off your baby bump.
If you’re a mommy-to-be and still trying to figure out your maternity wardrobe, there are a few basic rules to help you look and feel your best. We’ve put together some tips on looks you should avoid while pregnant. Take it all as a bad example and learn from it!
#1. Wearing pre-pregnancy clothing for too long
Even though the rest of your body might still be a size 4, don’t ever try to squeeze your baby bump into pre-pregnancy clothes. When those jeans don’t zip all the way up and buttons on your shirts start to fall off, then it’s time to go shopping!
You can find maternity clothing in almost every department store or even specialty boutiques. There are lots of options to match every style and budget. If you’re sticking to a specific price point, fit items in-store and then shop online to get better bargains. For example, you can find online coupons and offer codes for Target by signing up with some of the popular coupon websites.
#2. Wearing maternity clothing too soon
Another mistake is wearing maternity clothes way before any baby bump starts to show. You won’t look cute and pregnant, but more like you’re wearing someone else’s dress. Keep in mind that all pregnancies are different. Some women might begin to see a belly in the first trimester, while others can go as long as five to six months before looking preggers. Maternity clothing are also cut longer and wider in specific areas, so save it for when you really start to see a difference in your body.
#3. Showing too much
Besides the baby bump, there are other parts of your body that will grow at ginormous proportions (well, for some of us anyway). As your body prepares for your little bundle of joy, your breasts will grow to accommodate all that yummy breastmilk. Yes, that’s main purpose for bigger breasts when you’re pregnant. So while it’s ok to show some cleavage, you might want to resist the urge to go braless or channel your inner Kim Kardashian. Surely, you can be sexy while pregnant but make it more sophisticated and less sleazy.
#4. Experimenting with your looks
Considering all the hormonal changes, it’s probably not a good time to start experimenting with your looks. If you’re not typically spontaneous when it comes to changing your style, you might want to wait until you’re less emotional before getting that Mohawk or dyeing your hair blue. The last thing you want is to regret cutting off all your hair or choosing a look that’s not practical for your lifestyle.
#5. Buying all your clothing at once
Don’t try to get your entire maternity wardrobe during one shopping trip! You’ll need to shop continuously and for the body you have at that moment. Don’t try to predict how your body is going to look two or three months ahead. As I mentioned earlier, you may or may not see a huge difference in your size and shape from one trimester to the next. So it’s better to relax, wait and shop for clothes as you gain more weight.
